Mother's Intuition Gone Bad!
Submitted by one of our readers...
Yesterday a long time and very far away family friend called to catch up. We had been talking for a while and surprisingly, all three boys had been peacefully playing during the conversation. When I started hearing what I thought was just going to be friendly banter, I quietly slipped away to a bathroom to keep my friend from hearing the commotion. We continued talking and laughing and the noise got a little louder, so I turned the bathroom sink water on full blast, stepped into the shower, and closed the curtain. (Come on, who hasn't done this?) At this point I've told my friend what's going on and we're laughing about it. Still talking and laughing. Noise getting louder. Talking and laughing. Banging on the door. The conversation finally comes to an end and as I open the door I am greeted by my middle son, Dawson (8) holding paper towels soaked in blood with a smirk on his face like, "This important enough for ya, lady?". Evidently, the "friendly banter" ended in a full out fight and the youngest, Davis (5) ended up with a bloody nose. I follow Dawson to the kitchen where I see multiple bloody kitchen towels (at which point I thought, "Not my William Sonoma towels!") and blood stains on my kitchen rug. It wasn't difficult to locate the injured brother because there was a trail of blood from my kitchen sink to the living room floor where I found him lying, stiff as a board, on his back. He was smeared and tired of lying so still, but I'm sure had been instructed by the other two to, "Lay on your back and don't move!!" They had practically packed his nose with papertowels...all guilt driven attention, I'm sure.
So much for intuition!

Swim Lessons
So we are taking swim lessons. I am getting a little impatient and I am waiting for my daughter to catch on and hoping she does so before summer!
Every week we go and have a lesson. Some weeks we do nothing that exciting and new and some weeks we do.
This week was pretty good. She is now putting her eyes in the water and kicking, though it looks like she is running. I have the hardest time remembering what I did to learn how to swim. I guess I took swim lessons too but it is funny, I do not remember not knowing how to swim. Maybe she will feel the same way.
The only reason I am writing this is because I am frustrated it is taking so long and I need to vent. So thanks for listening. I think this week I felt like an idiot because 2 or 3 times I was called in to the pool area to wipe a booger that had come out of her nose and then I go and talk to the teacher when the lesson is over and my daughter is doing something with her hands down her pants. Nice... You wonder what the other parents are thinking. Oh well move on and I am sure they were not even looking at my daughter - they were looking at their kids.
Well if she doesn't learn to swim soon she sure does know how to blow out boogers on to her lip and take care of "things" inside her pants. UGH!

Rhymes
I do not know about you but I spend a ton of time in the car. I often feel like I should have a bed set up so we can just sleep there. I hate that time but I do love it too because Syd and I get to talk a lot. We talk about how cars are "smiling" or "frowning". We talk about different colors we are passing. We talk about our plan for the day and what we are doing next.
My favorite thing in the car, though, is to listen to her talk to herself. If she is content you will hear her go in to amazing songs and rhymes. ONes that absolutely make no sense at all but so sweet to listen to. Today she was singing about how her toes were happy. I love it and I love listening to it - it is so sweet and so innocent until....
Today while with her dad she started rhyming. Now rhyming, as a preschool teacher, is a great exercise. Encourage your little ones to do it. Even rhyming words that do not exist is fine. They are finding sounds and connecting them and that is great. Well Syd can go on a rabbit trail. She just starts talking and rhyming and making no sense at all. Sometimes she will even put them in to a tune, if you can call it that.
Well she began rhyming with the word "truck" - well here it goes and it went on and on and got to words that are not appropriate for a 40 year old much less a 4 year old. The bad part is that when she heard that word and some others she probably thought they sounded so fun and kept saying them. Not so bad when you are in the car - but outside in the parking lot - HMMMMMMM - "Great Teachable Moment" or a "Move On Moment"? I wonder sometimes if that is how these words were made up - a kid rhyming in the parking lot!
Have fun listening to your kids today and let them make you laugh! Who knows you may learn a new word!
