I hate making New Year's Resolutions. I never accomplish them and so I have started not making them. This year I am trying to find an easy resolution that will not make me feel like a failure. Here are some ideas:
Be an Initiator.
Many folks sit around and wait to be asked to do something and then get frustrated when they are not asked. You will find if you start to do the initiating and the asking, then folks will start asking you. Try it - try to ask once a month or so some friends out to a movie, dinner - just the girls or couples too. You will then find you might just become a hot commodity! :) Be careful though - if folks say no - you need to be ready for that. It is not a reflection on you - be secure and strong and just keep asking.
I think we are going to try to do a girl's night out this year - once a month to dinner and a movie. If you initiate you get to pick the movie too!
Become Current.
Laura is deciding to become more familiar with the digital musical world. ITunes, downloading, ipods, etc... Decide to stay current in any area. Be specific that way you are not overwhelmed. Here are some specific areas: following politics, web pages, music, movies, tv...
Pray more with your children.
Take all those Christmas Cards that you got - especially the picture ones and set them by your child's bed in a basket and pick one out and pray with your child for that family or friend. You don't have to do it every night or be legalistic about it - just try it every now and then.
Document your life.
Take more pictures. Document things. I have decided that on my kid's birthday I write a little note to her on a photo book with one picture. I write about what she did this year and what made me laugh. It will be something she will love because it will be in my own words and in my writing about her. :)
Replace an old item.
Try to find one item that is old this year to replace with a new one. Replace your sunglasses, your tupperware, your tennis shoes, cosmetics, purse - just replace something that is old. :)
Read.
I hate to read - it seems like I am wasting time. BUT I am going to try and read one or two books this year. Sounds pretty pitiful but I am starting with a reasonable goal and then hopefully it will become more of a habit.
Be Positive
I have spent some time recently visiting my husband's aunt in a retirement community. It has reminded me that there are two kinds of folks at this stage of life. Ones that are fun to be with and ones that are bitter. The fun ones make fun of themselves, enjoy hearing about you, and love to laugh. The bitter ones complain and complain and complain. Even at our age we can choose to be positive and then as we exercise that "positive muscle" it will hopefully become a habit. So, our kids, grandkids, and great grandkids will love to be with us.
Have Fun!
Run in the rain. Stomp in puddles. Eat some cookie dough. Ride with your windows down.
